Sweatin'!

Woo! Hoo!
I had a VERY strong run today! I only ran 3, but I shaved off an entire 2 mins off my normal time. Not bad! Not bad! hahaha!

It's getting warm already today. In fact, it is now just 9:02AM and its already in the 70's.

Well, I've got a busy day ahead of me so I'd better run.

I'll write again soon!!!

Dog Tired...

That's it! I'm tired!
I'm staying up too late at night these days.
I need to get my rest. I will go to bed at a decent time tonight so I'm nice and refreshed in the morning.

That's all I have to report today. No workout. No NOTHIN'!

See ya!

Easy, Breezy 6 Today....

Good morning!
Well, I took yesterday off, as planned and got lots of rest.
I went to church and then home to work on a project, but no physical work.

My day started early. I woke up at 4 and couldn't go back.
My running partner sent me a text at 5 to signal she was up and getting dressed.
I got up, took a vitamin and ate a bowl of oatmeal. I left home to meet her at 5:45am.

We met at about 6:10AM and ran 6 miles. This was one of my strongest runs!
So I'm trying to figure out the reason why. It wasn't that I'd gotten enough rest, because I didn't.
I don't know what the difference was today, but, in any case, it was a strong and fulfilling run.
Can't wait to go tomorrow!!!

My eating yesterday was ooookaaay. I ate good things, but a bit too much of it. I also messed up by eating about 8 pieces of licorice! We have a big tub of it here and it's such a temptation.

Tomorrow I will focus on my upper body training. Then Weds I'll be back on the road.

Check in with me later! And why haven't you written????

Me.

Ten Miles and Counting...

Well, I fell a little short of my goal of 14 miles today.
I ran only 10 instead. I'm feeling the effects of not getting enough rest last night.
I knew better, but I was working on something and I just didn't want to stop!

The weather is pleasant today....a perfect day for running.

I went to the farmers market afterwards and bought 1/4 lbs of roasted almonds, an apple, an English cucumber, a red and a yellow tomato and two pluots. I ate one of the plutos and thought about someone very special, and listened to live music being played by one of a number of rotating musicians at the market. I was driven to tears briefly when they played one of my late mother's favorites..."Has Anybody Seen My Gal..." She used to play that song on our piano when I was a little girl. After that, I felt compelled to contribute money in the tip jar. I avoided eye contact to prevent a full on weeping outpour of emotion.

I'm home now and will focus on eating correctly, and will go to bed tonight at a reasonable hour. I think I will take tomorrow off, and get back in the swing of things on Monday.

God's blessings to you!

By the way....Why haven't you commented on my blog yet?????

Good Morning!

Well, I'm off to a great start this morning!
I met my running partner for 6 miles this morning.
It was a nice, smooth run this time. I could have easily gone another 2 or 3.
My goal was to run easy today in prep for 14 miles with TNT tomorrow.

My eating has been good. Did well yesterday and my weight this morning (116.6)
reflects that.

Breakfast: Bowl of oatmeal
Snack (which Im eating now) is an apple and cottage cheese.
Lunch: Tuna, Brown Rice and Broccoli
Snack: Peach and cottage cheese
Dinner: Salmon, Yam and Broccoli

I'm glad to have my Cottage Cheese back! I'm glad, glad, glad! I missed it!

Well, I'm off to start my day.
I plan to go to bed early to prepare for tomorrows run.

Peace!

Back on the Block

OK...so here's my issue.
It doesn't take much to mess up my groove.
Excuse the vernacular, but I can't think of another way to say it.
Well, I suppose I could say..."I've gotten out of my routine", but that doesn't sound as base as the truth of it is.

So, I've gotta get my groove back, so to speak and if today is any indication,
I'm on it baby!

My "groove" was interrupted by a business trip last week which took me out of state for only 4 days. I did run on one of the days I was away and it was a very, sweat dripping, heart pounding run! I felt good about it and even got a nod of approval from someone working out in the hotel gym. But after that, I went downhill, eating, no exercising and I had a celebratory Kir Royal along with pita chips and spinach dip on my final night there. I ate too much, and of all the wrong things....pasta, bread, and I even bought a bag of peanut M&M's! What the heck!
I came home weighing a full 4 lbs more than I did before I left!

I haven't done any exercising since last Weds so it's been a full week. I've had trouble getting my sleep patterns back and I've been pulling some all nighters preparing for some meetings.

So, this morning, I forced myself up and got back to my routine.
I sprang up out of bed, dressed in my running clothes and joined Steve Ross on "Inhale". He's the Yoga guy on the Oxygen channel. He comes on at 6am. I followed his routine for an hour, then made the bed (to make sure I didn't get back in it) and laced up my shoes. I sent a text to my running partner to let her know I was about to run 3 miles and I went.

I was surprised that my stamina was virtually unaffected by the layoff. That is not the case normally. I usually run 3 miles at a flat 30 mins. Today, I clocked in at 28! I couldn't believe it!
You know, I really think treadmill running helps to improve my speed.

So, the plan is to run 6 tomorrow (Friday) and 14 on Saturday with the TNT team.
Sunday will be off and then I'll start again.

See you tomorrow and please feel free to comment.

Peace!

75 Days to go....

OK, so I've lost track of blogging again.
It's not so easy to stop and enter a post, but I will try to do a better job of it.

Let's see... Here's my running log from last week.

Sun - Three Miles
Mon - Off
Tue - Three Miles
Wed - Three Miles
Thur - Three Miles
Fri - Three Miles
Sat - Ten Miles at Knights Ferry.
Total: 26 miles.

Now, going forward I have to get really serious. We have decided on the San Jose Rock N' Roll 1/2 marathon on Oct 5th.

I have added a countdown clock to my blog (look to the right...).
I'm also doing the body for life challenge as well. That is about a 12 week program as well so, I will do them both at the same time. The BLF work is my cross training.
I will be discussing both, the training and the BLF work on this blog going forward.

My goal today is 3, but I have to really step it up now. You will see increased mileage from this point forward. Im trying to increase my time also ...to 8:30. I'm working really hard on that. I want to do well. I'm on a mission. No less than 30 miles per week.

See you tomorrow!

Me.

July 14, 2008

It's Monday morning and I'm sitting in front of a fan, cooling off after a nice 3 miles.
It's about 69 degrees now. Feels warmer.
I didnt eat before running and I can feel the difference.
I've been eating a lot over the past few days and I've picked up a few lbs. (117 now).
I achieved my goal of 115 but decided it's still too heavy. My new goal is 110, then
I'll work on the weights.

Well, I'm off to a meeting and some errands.

By the way... I ran 9 last saturday. Felt great!

See ya!

Where was I?

OK.....I have been a bit lazy about keeping up with my blog, but I will do better going forward. I wont be providing as much detail, but will keep you updated nevertheless.

Yesterday was Weds. We ran 6 miles from Tully to Kaiser.
We started at 5:30AM to beat the heat. Reached 107 degrees today.
I am running indoors today.... 3 or 4 miles.

See you tomorrow.

Pier to Peak - 89 days to go

Date: 6/3
Time: 7:37AM
Duration: 29.5 mins
Place: Booth / Hatch circle
Distance today: 3 miles Total for the week: 6 Miles
Sit ups today: 0 Total for the week: 25
Weather: 68°, Humidity: 42%, and the Wind:6 mph

This morning I woke up nice and refreshed, although I didn't go to bed early as I intended to. I had it in mind today that I would beat my time. I felt like I had the energy to do it and I did! I was beginning to wonder what it was that I was doing differently! One thing that I've noticed is that the first 1/2 mile is HARD! I can't wait to get past that first segment of the run. Once I'm past that, I'm in good shape.

It's funny how sometimes I play games with myself to keep my motivation up. Sometimes I will run according to where I am. At times I run past certain businesses where I know who may be watching me as I run past. I really try to pour it on then I pull back when I get past them. As you know, I have been running with my ipod and the songs are timed just right for the type of motivation I need during that segment of the run. The first song.."Early in the morning". That works. Then the next song is "I got the feeling" (I'm just getting in my groove). The third song is a lot more aggressive and boastful..."8 miles by JayZ". I need that to push me on since I'm 1/2 way at that point. Then "Show Stopper"...this is when I show off a little in front of the stores. By the time I get to Eminims song, I am coming down the home stretch and needing the motivation to push. That song starts off by saying...."If you had just one shot, one opportunity...would you capture it, or just let is slip???" THAT gets me going!

My goal now is to run with the ipod all week, then on Saturdays for my long run, I will run without it, as I would in the marathon. The ipod is like a coach, talking to me in my head. During the actual event, the coach can't be there with me so...there ya go.

Well, I am off to start my day. I'm feeling great!

Pier to Peak - 91 days to go

Date: 6/2
Time: 9:30AM
Duration: 30 mins
Place: Booth / Hatch circle
Distance today: 3 miles Total for the week: 3 Miles
Sit ups today: 25 Total for the week: 25
Weather: 72°. and rising, Humidity:34%, and the Wind: 12 mph

Well, it was rather tough getting up this morning although it shouldnt have been since I took a two hour nap yesterday and I took yesterday off ... no running, no exercise. I just felt like resting my body.

After my run I enjoyed a nice warm breakfast of fresh spinach, 1/2 yam and a handfull of almonds and water.

Todays run was a pleasure. In fact, as I think of it, I am reminded of that song called "Daydream", by the Loving Spoonfulls. Take a look at some of the lyrics.

"Daydream"
what a day for a daydream
what a day for a daydreamin' boy
and im lost in a daydream
dreamin bout my bundle of joy
and even if time aint really on my side
its one of those days for takin' a walk outside
i'm blowin the day to take a walk in the sun
and fall on my face on somebodies new mowed lawn

Cute, isn't it? I thought of it because during the run I was able to let my mind drift off to various things, but something in particular that I thought of were trees. How often do you stop and think about trees? I thought about how old various trees were and all the benefits of trees....shade, and oxygen and fruits and nuts, and homes and shelter for animals, a place for territory markings (LOL) for some and the list goes on and on. Of course these are benefits of LIVE trees. I didnt want to think about the benefits of them after they been cut. That list is even longer, but in some ways I felt badly about cutting them down. LONG LIVE THE INTERNET...THE GREAT TREE SAVER!

I had a friend who loved trees. She used to sit underneath them and wonder aloud about how old it was, and what it's been through. It is fascinating to consider the life of a tree. Who planted it and why? I like thinking of the symbolism of trees, "Like a tree planted by the water", I shall not be moved! You got that right.

Well, I am off to start my day. I feel good about the start of my morning. I'm looking forward to another one...tomorrow....Lord willing.

Sit ups today: 25 Total for the week: 50

Weather: 65°. and rising, Humidity:48%, and the Wind: 6 mph

Again, I left a lot later than I intended to this morning. I let good old Mr. P do his thing with me. He said..."Stay in bed a little longer. You need the rest and you know...rest is good for you!" Well, I ended up staying in bed 2 1/2 hrs longer than I should have BUT, I got up and did what I had to do.

Today was my first official "Long Run" for this training session. It was only 4 miles but I will increase the distance as I go along.

I used my ipod today for the very first time and it was FUN, FUN, FUN! I'm telling you, that really got me going. This is the same list of songs I use when I'm on the elliptical. Someone put the list of songs together for me and they did an excellent job! Here's a sampling of the list. I suggest creating a list of your own, but for me, this works!

I will run again in the morning, but will drop back down to 3 miles, the same for Monday, but I will take Tue off as my off day.

Here's the list!
#1 - "Early In the Morning" by The Gap Band
#2 - "I Got the Feeling" by James Brown

Hey there...

Well, I have decided it is best to prepare for my run tomorrow ahead of time.
I plan to do my "long run" tomorrow at 7:00AM with a local running club.
Each Saturday, I will increase the distance of my long run which helps build my endurance.

Running with my ipod is something I have never done....ever. I have used it on my treadmill but never outdoors. I am going to attempt to run with it tomorrow, although I expect to get a few funny looks and stares from others when I do. It seems to be kind of tabu for the elite runners to use an ipod.

I took a look on line in search of some running music to put on my iPod. or MP3 are very personal. However, I'm going to attempt to cover some of the best motivators I've found all kinds of material including audiobooks and people talking, rather than reading or singing. I'm considering adding some of those in for variation. I am also considering a Nike + iPod shoe insert to use with my iPod Nano. I have learned quite a bit about using it including the fact that I can program in my most motivating song and have it start to play on demand.

I found tons of material on music down loads, some of them were free downloads, and music to transfer directly to my ipod but honestly, I didn't find a source of the kind of music that appeals to me. But frankly speaking....the kind of music that appeals to me changes as my moods do. I may want smooth jazz one day, another day R&B, and then I could consider a little bit country ....or a little bit Rock and Roll! I feel like I'm channeling Donnie and Marie here!

Oh well, I will settle for the songs I have already and will consider adding more after I decide if running with my ipod is a good idea or not.

Good night!

Pier to Peak - 93 Days to go....

Ciao!!!

Date: 5/30
Time: 9:07AM
Duration: 31 mins
Place: Circular from home and back (Home, booth, Whitmore, Mitchell, Hatch, Home)
Distance today: 3 miles Total for the week: 12 Miles
Sit ups today: 20 Total for the week: 25
Comments: I left a lot later than I intended to this morning but I stayed up late working on some projects. I ran another 3 today with the goal of getting a little faster and stronger each time. I considered running with my ipod but it wasnt charged up. Will have it ready for tomorrow. The weather is pretty warm today. It's 62°. and rising, Humidity:58%, and the Wind: 8 mph. It's going to be in the 80s today. I really need to get out earlier. I hate running in the heat.
I didn't have breakfast yet. That's probably why my run wasnt as strong.
I will make a small protein drink for breakfast and I need to go shopping for lunch and dinner. I will THINK about everything I eat today. One more week and I will officially cross over from being a vegetarian to veganism. I started eating salmon during my training but continued to eat it even during non training times. I have taken it out of my diet as well as dairy products (except for cream in my coffee once per day). I will eventually start to incorporate soy in my coffee but honestly, I dont like the combination of soy and coffee. YUCK. It tastes like dishwater....not that Ive ever tasted dishwater.

OK...that's it! I feel great! Now that my exercise is done, I can get on with my day!

How did YOU do today? What is Mr. P whispering in YOUR ear?

Peak to Pier - 94 Days to go

Bonjour,
Well, it is mostly likely obvious that I have fallen prey to Mr. P and his crafty ways. I have only two excuses to offer, but frankly neither of them are valid enough to justify not running yesterday, nor today.

I did not run, nor did I cross train. This was another "late night" and I didnt eat correctly, didn't drink enough water, and I didnt get enought sleep last night. Today, for breakfast I had a handful of cherries from my tree and a cup of coffee. (not good). For lunch I did well. I had salad (no dressing) and garbanzo beans, and broccoli and a side of black beans. YUM! Later, I had peanuts and a beverage. BAD. All in all, my caloric content was ok....except for the peanuts. I had almonds in my purse. I should have eaten those.

OK...enough of my little pity party. I'm getting back on track first thing in the morning ....6:30AM sharp. I will update this blog by 7:30AM ....NO EXCUSES!

Mr. P....you are on notice. I will be chasing YOU during my run tomorrow morning.

Pier to Peak...96 Days to go

Hola!
OK...this was what I call a "late night". I worked in the office today and got home late. Today is a "cross training" day so no running. I only crunched out 15 sit ups for starters. Going forward, cross training will include upper and/or lower body work but will always include crunches. I will do crunches every single day, increasing by 5 each day which will mean that I will end up doing 495 per day. Yeah...right! But...I'll at least start out with that in mind. Let's see how long I can keep it up!

My eating was not on par today. I had a banana and almonds for breakfast and coffee in the afternoon and taboleh and pita bread for lunch and peanuts to bevs. I should have skipped the peanuts and beverages.

I'll tighten back up tomorrow on the eating and resume the green leafys.

I'm going to bed now. Sleep is just as important as exercise.

See you tomorrow!!!

Date: 5/25
Time: 1:12PM
Duration: 30 mins
Place: Circular from home and back (Home, booth, Whitmore, Mitchell, Hatch, Home)
Distance: 3 miles
Total distance: 9 miles (will add this to my next run)
Comments: The weather was 70°, Humidity 36% and the Wind 6 mph. It was a pretty warm day today. I ate a late lunch of Oatmeal, apples, blueberries and a dash of vanilla soy milk. I had to wait until the food digested before going. I would much rather have left earlier to beat the heat. I'm feeling consistant and looking forward to some cross training tomorrow. So now....take THAT "Mr. P" You didn't get to me today!!!!

Pier to Peak....98 days to go...

Date: 5/25
Time: 9:29AM
Duration: 40 mins
Place: Circular from home and back (Home, booth, Whitmore, Mitchell, Hatch, Home)
Distance: 3 miles
Total distance: 6 miles (will add this to my next run)
Comments: Today I ran with my 10 year old grandson! He's used to running about 1 mile at school so 3 miles was a stretch. So obviously our time was less than optimum, BUT, we made it and it was fun. Today is still overcast.
It's 65°, Humidity:48%, Wind:WNW 13 mp and no rain. It was another perfect day for a run!

I had a protein drink w/ 1/2 of banana for breakfast and a little taboleh that I made last nite. I'll have lots of fruit and oatmeal and hummus to eat today.

Well, I'm off to my sisters to play cards and visit with my son.

Have a great holiday weekend.

I'll check in again tomorrow.

Countdown - Pier to Peak 99 days to go

Hello!

I welcome you to this space...the place I will chart my training for 3 upcoming marathons for '08.

I expect this blog to be filled with a mixture of successes and misses, promises and vows. But, such is life, or so it is for me anyway.

This log is primarily for myself. It is a journal to keep myself accountable and on track. I procrastinate like crazy and fall prey to what I call "fly demon thoughts". These thoughts are pesty, irritating thoughts which plague my efforts at good will and honorable intentions.
Swat at them though I might, they crop up at times like fruit flies...unswatable, and tiny, but there, in growing numbers and ultra annoying. As such, the daddy of all my fly demon thoughts is Mr. P...., that is, P for Procrastination. There are others, but Mr. P is the proverbial top dog.
I run at times, in spite of Mr. P. Other times, because of him. More later on all of that.

I fought off the original idea to name this blog...The Demon Fly Swatter, but ruled on the side of that which is cute, catchy, palatable and for me...relevant, as I love bridges, I love running and I love being punny. We'll talk more about each later too, and no, that is not a P-influenced comment, btw.

Other things you can come to expect to see is a tracking of my training.
The form I will start with will look something like this:

Date
Time
Duration
Place
Distance
Weather
Total Distance
Comments

For Example:
The following is what I did today

Date: 5/24
Time: 12:21pm
Duration: 35 mins
Place: Circular from home and back (Home, booth, Whitmore, Mitchell, Hatch, Home)
Distance: 3 miles
Total distance: 3 miles (will add this to my next run)
Comments: Today I ran with my running partner Sally (virtually). We text'd each other as we were about to run, then again when we returned. Today is overcast and drizzling. The weather is in the mid to high 50's and no wind. It's a perfect day to run! The 1st mile was tough as I've been out of the gym for 2 weeks. Will try not to miss more than 2 days in a row going forward.

Well, unfortunatly I have to log off now, but before I go, I'd like to share with you the list of races I place to compete in this year:

Aug 31st, "Pier to Peak" in Santa Barbara (1/2 Marathon)
Oct 19th, "Nikes Women's" in San Francisco (Full Marathon)
Dec 7th, "Calif Int'l Marathon" in Sacramento (Full Marathon)

BTW, in case you're wondering, I have run marathons previously. Some full, some halves and a few 5k's. I'm starting anew after a hip problem and just general laziness and of course, the dreaded "P".

Oh...and yes, I encourage you to add your comments at any time.

Signing off for now.

One Bridge.
